How to get airline approval for batteries

Obtaining approval for batteries from airlines requires following the following steps and providing relevant proof materials:

Understanding relevant regulations and standards: Firstly, it is necessary to understand and comply with the requirements of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN38.3). These regulations mainly involve safety testing standards for the transportation of lithium batteries.

Choose an accredited testing institution: Select a qualified and recognized third-party testing institution for testing. These institutions are capable of conducting tests that comply with UN38.3 and IATA DGR requirements, and issuing corresponding appraisal reports.

Prepare samples and technical documents: Prepare battery samples and related technical documents for testing, including battery technical specifications, production process documents, test reports (if any), and other relevant technical information.

Submit application: Submit a testing application to the selected testing institution, including the testing application form, battery samples, technical documents, and other required materials.

Sample testing: The testing agency will conduct a series of tests according to UN38.3 standards, including height simulation, temperature cycling, vibration testing, impact testing, external short circuit testing, collision testing, overcharge testing, and forced discharge testing.

Obtain test report: After the test is completed, the testing agency will issue a detailed test report. If the battery passes all tests, the testing agency will issue a lithium battery air transport appraisal report, which includes the name and contact information of the testing agency, the name and contact information of the applicant, detailed information about the battery, testing standards and methods, test results and conclusions, and relevant compliance statements.

Submit report: Submit the lithium battery air transport appraisal report to the airline for approval. If the battery passes all tests and obtains a certification report, the airline usually approves the air transportation of the battery.

Attention:

The regulations for carrying batteries may vary among different airports and airlines, so it is best to consult the relevant airline or airport for specific regulations before carrying them.
The rated energy value of lithium batteries shall not exceed 100Wh, and batteries exceeding 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh must be approved by the airline before they can be carried.
